Yay, Literature exam is over! What have I taken away from the poetry classes over the past 3 weeks? I'd say a deeper appreciation for poetry. I used to think, "Oh yea, poetry. It's supposed to be romantic, makes people who read it intellectual, and yea, it's romantic." But I've come to realize that it isn't only good for romance, it conveys much more than that - lament, love, identity, and political issues.
Of course, so far the ones about love still touch me deepest. Hence, I shall quote Shakespeare and his famous words!
'Sonnet 18' by William ShakespeareShall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometimes declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
But then again, as far as this goes, I'm not about to go buy a book of poetry, lock myself in my room and have sudden epiphanies. It's math time! Something I'm MUCH more familiar with :) Cheers!
